John Denver was a superstar performer who influenced millions of people with his pop-folk songs and many of them based in Colorado. Born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. in Roswell New Mexico, he was in love with Colorado and later moved to Aspen. Denver's state anthems inspired many to visit Colorado. G. Brown of the Colorado Music Hall of Fame says the fact that John Denver is unlike any other musician who represents Colorado. Denver, the Hall of Fames' inaugural inductee was recognized with this honor in 2011. To many, Denver is the Colorado image. If you travel with me, you may meet people at opposite sides of the world. For example an individual who is from New Zealand. And when you tell them you're Colorado-based, Colorado the response is "Oh John Denver!" Brown said. Denver's first Top 10 hit as a solo artist following a brief period of performing with small folk music group included Take Me Home Country Roads composed by Bill Danoff. Danoff composed the track in the spirit of Johnny Cash, but Denver was able to hear an early version and knew it would become an instant hit in the top 10. The song was recorded by the singer only a few days afterward when he performed it in front of an enthusiastic audience in Washington D.C.
